Abstract
A field experiment was carried out to analyze the effects of goat manure, compost tea, and Gliricidia leaf extract on the growth and yield performance of Alternanthera sessilis at the Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Jaffna. The research was conducted to determine the best organic input which leads to the highest productivity of Alternanthera
sessilis and to reduce the application of chemical inputs which may cause negative impacts on human health and the environment. The highest number of leaves was recorded from goat manure applied plants at 58 and the least from Gliricidia applied plants at 36, following the control. In the case of leaf length, goat manure treated plants exhibited the best as
4.4cm. The highest plant height was obtained from goat manure application at 27.9cm and the least from Gliricidia application at 24.2cm. Fresh and dry yields were significantly higher in goat manure-treated plants at 105.86g and 28.56g respectively. The least was observed from Gliricidia applied plants as 49.22g and 14.15g respectively in fresh and dry yields after the control plot.
As an overall result of the experiment, it could be determined that the goat manure had the best performance in comparison with use of compost tea and Gliricidia leaf extract application on the growth and yield performance of Alternanthera sessilis.
